The peaceful island of Zanzibar is a melting pot of Arabic, Indian and African cultures. The name alone conjures up images of explorers, white sand beaches and exotic spices. Exploring Zanzibar will take you from pristine beaches to the narrow streets and bustling markets of Stone Town, its historic city. Scuba dive, snorkel or swim, or relax at your seaside hotel overlooking the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, and enjoy and intriguing tour of the cottage spice industries.
DAY 1          ARUSHA OR NAIROBI / ZANZIBAR
Fly to the spice island of Zanzibar. Situated off the northern coast of Tanzania and surrounded by the tranquil Indian Ocean, this tropical island is the perfect conclusion to any safari. The Zanzibar Serena Inn, our home for the next four nights, is located in Stone Town overlooking the ocean. Free transportation to the beach is available by road or boat (depending on the tides) from the hotel.

DAY 2          ZANZIBAR
Take a morning guided walking tour around old Stone Town through the maze of narrow streets and whitewashed houses of distinctive Arab influence. Enjoy lunch and continue to historic Prison Island with its giant tortoises. You will have opportunity to swim, snorkel and sunbathe.

DAY 3          ZANZIBAR
This morning’s sightseeing shows why Zanzibar is referred to as “the spice island.” Visit small farms in the rural area that grow cloves, vanilla, nutmeg, cardamom and other spices, medicinal and ornamental plants, and tropical fruits. You will also visit the Persian Baths, built in 1850 by Seyyid Said bin Sultan (the first Sultan of Zanzibar) for his wife Princess Shehrzad (granddaughter of Fateh Ali Shah of Persia). Return to the Inn where the rest of the day is at leisure.

DAY 4          ZANZIBAR
This morning will take you to Jozani Forest; the smaller trees and shrubs make several sub-canopies under the highest canopy. You will walk through the nature trail, a habitat for many species of animals and birds. Jozani is the last stronghold of the rare red colobus monkey, isolated from its mainland counterparts for at least ten to fifteen thousand years. This afternoon, visit Kizimkazi, the original capital of the island, and see the ruins of a Shirazi settlement. Then board a boat to search for dolphins. Once you locate these gentle creatures, you can join them for a swim before returning to the hotel in Stone Town.

DAY 5          ZANZIBAR / DAR ES SALAAM
Morning at leisure. Fly from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam and transfer to the International airport for your onward flight. (B,L)
