Tarangire, best known for its herds of elephant, is home to more than 2,500 individuals. Other common mammals include impala, African buffalo, zebra and Masai giraffe. Rarer mammals include leopard, fringe-eared oryx and lesser kudu. The park is also home to more than 260 bird species.

DAY 4 LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast we drive to Lake Manyara National Park for a morning game drive before ascending the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley to the plantation area surrounding the town of Karatu. Lake Manyara is an interesting park with a variety of eco-systems present in a relatively small area. Astute observation of baboon behavior is almost guaranteed and the bird populations at the hippo pool include pelicans and flamingoes.

DAY 5 NGORONGORO CRATER
Today we’ll explore the Ngorongoro Crater, the earth’s largest unbroken caldera. A veritable “Garden of Eden”, the crater is reputed to contain the highest density of carnivores, which includes cheetah, leopard, and lion. This is the only place in East Africa where one can easily observe a natural population of black rhino.

DAYS 6-8 OLDUPAI GORGE / SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
Today we drive to Tanzania’s most renowned national park and home to the greatest concentration of large mammals, the Serengeti. En-route we visit Oldupai Gorge, where the Leakey family discovered one of the most important prehistoric archaeological sites on earth. After viewing the gorge and museum and listening to an interpretive presentation, we continue to the Serengeti Plains, arriving in the late afternoon. We spend the next three nights in our tented camp situated near the migrating herds of wildebeest and zebra. Morning and afternoon game drives each day.

Grevy’s zebra, somali ostrich, beisa oryx, gerenuk, yellow baboon, Guenther’s dik-dik and reticulated giraffe are characteristic of this harsh region. This is the land of the Samburu, (related to the Maasai), a pastoral people distinguished by women who wear layers of beads in choker fashion around their necks and men made famous by their colorful adornment and high-jumping dances.
